  • Grace Asio on her farm called Good Hope Farm. Before meeting Send a Cow Grace was practically abandoned as a wife. Her and her husband had lots of debts and they almost had to remove their son from school, due to a lack of school fees. Now, after attending many gender training sessions, they work together and have realised that when they work together they get a lot more work done. They have paid of hteir debts and their son has just finished a diploma in agriculture.

  • Inside the recording studio at Radio Instruction to Strengthen Education (RISE) project. VSO volunteer teacher trainer, Daphne Sharpe helps to write programmes to teach Tanzanian children literacy, numeracy, HIV/AIDS prevention, and life skills related to health, hygiene, and nutrition via interactive radio instruction (IRI). Lessons are broadcast over Tanzania's national radio station network, and trained on-site education mentors lead children through the lessons using printed guides. Wind-up and solar-powered radios allow students and teachers to participate in the daily radio education programmes even in remote locations.

  • Children from Florence's family eating maize porridge before heading off to school. Before her training with Send a Cow the children were't having anything to eat in the mornings and some weren't even able to go to school because of a lack on school fees.
  • Beatrice Wobudyasi started out by living in the cow shed with the cow she was given by Send a Cow. Now she has built a larger house and looks after four orphans, as well as seven of her own children. She is able to pay to educate nearly all of them and has recently been elected the leader of her group.

  • Children at school. This school has 800 children, with more than 100 children per classroom about half the children are sitting on the floor. Many children don't have enough food to eat and so find it difficult to concentrate. Send a Cow is helping families to grow more food to enable them to feed their children and also sell food to pay for school fees.
  • Acham Florence Okorom, 38, is a second wife and she lives on the compound with her co-wife,. They look after 12 children and 3 orphans. Since her training with Send a Cow, Florence has been able to look after the cow and grow enough food to feed all the family with surplus being sold at market. One of the major improvements is being able to give the children breakfast before they go to school.

  • Ana Grace Amongin's husband was killed by rebels leaving her to look after their 10 children, with no income. She managed to survive the famine by working in other peoples gardens. She heard about Send a Cow through her community. With their training and support she has been able to establish a farm on her husbands land, educate all her children and she now teachers others the skills she has learnt.

Fiker Behiwot is just one of the many organisations that benefit from the work of The Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples region HIV and AIDS Forum of NGOs (SNNPR), where VSO volunteer Catherine Mahoney is working.

  • VSO volunteer Pat Feinmann, a health visitor from the UK. Pat is working with NACWOLA (National Community for Women Living with HIV/ AIDS in Uganda) . NACWOLA is a non-governmental organisation supporting women living with HIV/AIDS and their families. It raises awareness of the rights of HIV positive women and its package of support includes counselling and advice on income generation activities. NACWOLA has 30 branches and over 40,000 members across Uganda, and it supports 80,000 vulnerable children..
  • VSO volunteer Chris Jary, a doctor from the UK, is working in a severely under-resourced district hospital in Masindi, Uganda. It is meant to have 11 doctors but has just four, including Chris. It serves a population of around 500,000 people, some of whom live up to 80 miles away. .
  • Susan Batenga Kibuuka is working alongside VSO volunteer Richard Feinmann, a doctor from the UK , at International Hospital Kampala in Uganda to develop an innovative new way of diagnosing TB, a disease that kills 70% of people living with HIV/AIDS.

The hospital is private so most patients pay for their treatment, but the Hope Ward is for those who can't afford healthcare.
